SANTIAGO, República Dominicana.- Falleció la tarde de este miércoles, 15 de noviembre, el destacado jurista Artagnan Pérez Méndez, en la ciudad de Santiago. Se destacó como uno de los más agudos penalistas dominicanos, con residencia en su natal Moca, y como profesor de varias generaciones de abogados salidos de las aulas de la Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra.
Artagnan Pérez Méndez era poeta y contaba con una de las bibliotecas más envidiadas en Derecho y en poesía. Compartía con jóvenes escritores y abogados en ciernes y les apoyaba en su desarrollo y les orientaba sobre los temas de mayor trascendencia para su crecimiento profesional. Fue miembro del Movimiento Interiorista, creado por el doctor Bruno Rosario Candelier, también de Moca.
Artagnan Pérez Méndez fue buscado para subir a estrado como abogado en temas de gran trascendencia pública. Era mordaz e incisivo como defensor de sus causas legales. Entre los casos más polémicos que tuvo a su cargo se cuentan la defensa del banquero Leonel Almonte, presidente del Banco Universal, y de Mario José Redondo Llenas, condenado por el asesinato del niño José Rafael Llenas Aybar.
También fue defensor de casos pro-bono, sin recibir pago por sus servicios, en situaciones en que amigos o compueblanos, o profesionales del derecho necesitaron de la agudeza de sus conocimientos penales. Para el profesor Pérez Méndez todo ciudadano imputado de faltas graves tiene derecho a utilizar los recursos legales que le garantizan la Constitución y las leyes para demostrar su inocencia. Su gran especialidad era la defensa de personas imputadas de delitos graves.
Falleció en Santiago, en el momento que era intervenido quirúrgicamente en un centro médico de esa ciudad.
El Doctor Artagnan Pérez Méndez, oriundo de Moca, se graduó de derecho en la universidad de Santo Domingo, en el año 1956.
