SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico.- Los Piratas rendirán homenaje a Roberto Clemente en su día, el 9 de septiembre, definido por las Grandes Ligas en 2002, con todos los jugadores luciendo en sus uniformes el número 21, que identificó al legendario pelotero puertorriqueño durante las 18 temporadas que jugó con la novena de Pittsburgh.
El Día de Roberto Clemente los Piratas jugarán contra los Medias Blancas de Chicago, en el PNC Park, en Pittsburgh.
Luis Clemente, uno de los tres hijos del legendario pelotero, dijo que desde 1973, un año después del fallecimiento de su padre, las únicas personas que podían utilizar el uniforme de Clemente eran ellos tres.
“Yo fui el que más cerca estuvo de tener ese honor, pero nunca lo logré, pues no llegué a jugar en Grandes Ligas”, dijo Clemente en un comunicado de prensa.
El presidente de los Piratas, Bob Nutting, aseguró que, tanto los jugadores como el resto del equipo, está “emocionado” de lucir el número 21 con “orgullo”, para no solamente buscar otras maneras para honrar el legado de Roberto, “sino para mantener su memoria vigente a través de nuestras acciones comunitarias”.
“Reconocemos el momento en que representa esto para todos nosotros en la organización, la familia Clemente, nuestros aficionados y la gente de Puerto Rico. Tomamos con mucho orgullo en representar a un gran embajador del juego de béisbol”, abundó.
Luego del encuentro, los uniformes de los Piratas se pondrán en subasta en la página pirates.auctions.mlb.com, donde los seguidores podrán tener la oportunidad de presentar su oferta para ganarse la camiseta.
Todas las ganancias de las camisetas irán a beneficio de la Fundación Clemente y las organizaciones benéficas de los Piratas.
El fenecido pelotero jugó 18 temporadas con los Piratas de Pittsburg en las Grandes Ligas y el 30 de septiembre de 1972 se convirtió en el primer pelotero latinoamericano en la historia y el undécimo jugador en conectar 3.000 imparables.
Roberto Clemente fue elegido en 15 ocasiones al “Juego de Estrellas”, disparó la emblemática marca de 3.000 imparables y tuvo un promedio de vida de .317.
Fue además ganador de cuatro títulos de bateo, doce Guantes de Oro, elegido Jugador Más Valioso de la Liga Nacional en 1966 y de la Serie Mundial en 1971, con dos campeonatos en 1960 y 1971.
Clemente murió en un accidente aéreo el 31 de diciembre de 1972 a los 38 años cuando llevaba suministros de ayuda a las víctimas del terremoto en Nicaragua.
El deportista puertorriqueño fue consagrado al Salón de la Fama del Béisbol en una elección especial el siguiente año, cuando el equipo de los Piratas retiró su uniforme número 21. EFE
