SANTIAGO, República Dominicana.- El celo de las autoridades del Ministerio de Cultura, por las áreas del Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración de Santiago, parece haber pasado de moda, 10 años después del llamado del relanzamiento cultural del lugar histórico, ya no se ven a los guardianes que llamaban la atención ante cualquier comportamiento inadecuado de un visitante.

Es notorio que el rigor es menos y que allí no falló la prédica popular del pueblo de que “escobita nueva barre bien” y esto es evidente en la falta de mantenimiento de algunas áreas.

Las estatuas de los héroes de la Restauración de 1863, ya no lucen el color bronce, han sido pintadas de negro, para tapar las tallas del tiempo, alega uno de los visitantes entrevistados sobre el tema.

La condición de las efigies delata la dejadez del personal del Ministerio de Cultura, que trabaja en el Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración (MHR), uno de los principales lugares de visitación turística de la ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros, esta plaza está también la zona más frecuentadas por los nativos.

Desde el llamado relanzamiento en agosto del 2007, una de las principales atracciones de esta plaza, han sido las estatuas de los personajes del proceso de la Restauración de la República, consagrado el 16 de agosto de 1863.

Leer sobre cada uno de los héroes restauradores, contemplar las figuras, tomarse fotos, son parte de los ritos de los visitantes al monumento.

Pero leer las notas biográficas de la mayoría de los próceres restauradores, ahora no es posible porque el texto escrito en las placas de la tarja se ha se ha borrado, otras láminas con el mensaje, histórico han sido desprendidas.

Otras bases de las estatuas tampoco tienen la tarja para identificar el personaje. Uno de los héroes, que el público tiene que adivinar de quien se trata, es el general Gaspar Polanco, quien fuera presidente de la República, en 1864, tras el movimiento restaurador.

Las estatuas de los restauradores, Gregorio Luperón, José Cabrera, Pepillo Salcedo, José Contreras y Pedro Antonio Pimentel, están desarmados, es decir, han perdidos sus espadas. Mientras que las estatuas de los próceres, José Cabrera y José Contreras, le falta una de sus manos.

Solo los personajes, cuyas estatuas están en la parte interna del Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración conservan los textos biográficos, en sus tarjas y el color bronce.

“Esta llama no se puede apagar nunca”, dijo Rafael Lantigua, el 17 de agosto del 2007, ministro de Cultura de turno, en un recorrido hecho un día después del acto de reinauguración del monumento, pero resulta que la antorcha con “la llama permanente en honor a los héroes de la restauración”, no solo se apagó, sino que está arrumbada, sin uso.

Además de la colocación de las estatuas en fibra de vidrio de los próceres restauradores, el proceso de del remozamiento Monumento los Héroes de la Restauración, conllevó el blanqueamiento de las paredes, de la estructura, cambio de los jardines y la construcción de tres plazas, Las Águilas, Las Tradiciones de Santiago y La Información.

El costo de la obra nunca ha sido revelado, en el recorrido del 17 de agosto del 2007, Lantigua dijo que no podía precisar el monto porque aún faltaban detalles, pero adelantó que la inversión estaría sobre los RD$ 100 millones.
