El proyecto para la ampliación de un tramo de la Autopista Duarte, a la entrada de Santiago de los Caballeros, ha generado un conflicto entre ejecutivos de la Alcaldía que se quejan de que no ha habido consenso para los trabajos y funcionarios del Gobierno Central que defienden la obra.
Los trabajos pautados para mejorar el tránsito desde la entrada del Aeropuerto Internacional del Cibao hasta la ciudad son parte de las obras anunciadas por el Gobierno en esta provincia en septiembre del 2021, con una inversión global de RD$ 42 millones.
La obra es considerada de gran importancia. No obstante, ha surgido la objeción y las reacciones de las autoridades municipales, encabezadas por el alcalde, Abel Martínez, que predican que la obra no ha sido consensuada con el Gobierno local.
Las autoridades municipales también objetan la obra porque el proyecto en avance conlleva la modificación de un momento construido durante la gestión de Martínez en el período 2016/2020.
“Está dentro de la planificación de los ingenieros y técnicos del proyecto de ampliación, obviamente será removido”, afirmó el regidor del Partido Revolucionario Moderno (PRM), Pedro Gómez.
Los ejecutivos municipales se quejan de que los responsables de la obra del Gobierno Central no solo han obviado a las autoridades locales sino que tienen la idea de quitar el monumento ubicado en límite de los municipios Santiago y Puñal, frente la Fortaleza Fernando Valerio.
En un mensaje en la cuenta de Twitter de la Alcaldía, las autoridades municipales han expresado que no se oponen al desarrollo de la ciudad, a la obra, sino a que se pierda lo invertido en el monumento.

A raíz de las reacciones de los ejecutivos del Ayuntamiento, se han sumado varias opiniones de funcionarios del Gobierno y la municipalidad, quienes defienden la obra por entender que representa un desarrollo para la provincia de Santiago.
Según Gómez, las reacciones de los ejecutivos de la Alcaldía es una muestra de que a las autoridades locales, en este caso al alcalde Martínez, “no le interesa el desarrollo de la ciudad”.
En otras de las opiniones sobre el proyecto vial, Ulises Rodríguez, director de Proindustria, ha dicho que no se entiende las reacciones de las autoridades municipales, porque ante de que se construyera el monumento a la entrada de Santiago, y que hoy es centro de conflicto, en el Ayuntamiento se tenía conocimiento de que había una propuesta de Estado pensada para la ampliación de este tramo de la Autopista Duarte.
